Man fined Sh5 million for illegal power connection
Nairobi, October 25, 2016…….A man has been fined Sh5 million by a Bungoma court for carrying out illegal electricity connection, boosting Kenya Power’s efforts to track down theft of electricity.
Geoffrey Kiberenge was arrested in Bungoma on October 19 and booked in Bungoma Police Station before appearing in court. He will serve a 10 year imprisonment in default of the fine.
Elsewhere in Coast, two suspects; Nathan Wasike and Paul Akuto Okech were arrested in Likoni yesterday for being in possession of KPLC labelled climbing irons. They were booked in at Likoni Police post and are expected to appear in Mombasa law courts.
In Ruaraka, Jacob Abade Anywaya was arrested for impersonating Kenya Power staff and engaging in unauthorized electricity connection exercise. The suspect has been linked to a number of unauthorized connections and retrofitting of meters in Roysambu, Githurai 44/45, Eastern Bypass and other areas within Ruiru. A fake staff ID card, KPLC branded twist seals, clamp meter and an inspection report booklet were recovered from the suspect.
In the last two weeks, 60 people have been arrested countrywide and charged in court for various offences, mostly illegal connections, following concerted efforts by Kenya Power security personnel to crack down illegal connections, unauthorized reconnections, vandalism and theft of electricity.
“Illegal connections undermine the reliability of power supply as they overload the distribution network and result in unplanned outages and may cause injury or death,” Kenya Power MD & CEO Dr. Ben Chumo said .
“In addition, victims of such exercises are exposed to unsafe electricity connections and suffer financial losses once the illegal lines are discovered and destroyed”.
“We urge our customers to make all payments for electricity connection at the Company’s offices, request for reconnection after disconnection and report any suspicious activity to our nearest offices, to the police and provincial administration,” Dr Chumo said.

We’ve all had our fair share of KPLC token meters annoying beeps, especially at night when they appear to beep the loudest.
Luckily, you can get some peace of mind by turning off the low electricity units alarm.
However, the procedure varies depending on the meter model. This is because token meters come in different types and models.
You might be familiar with your current token meter mute code but as soon as youmove houses, you find a totally different meter whose mute code is different.
The most common meter models include Inhemeter, Hexing, Nirav, Conlog Intech, and Actaris.
Here are the steps to clear or stop the beeping sound on the different models of prepaid meters.
Note: Be sure to follow the steps based on the model of your meter.
What are KPLC prepaid meters?
As electricity became a necessity, the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), now Kenya Power, connected households to the grid and installed post-paid meters.
Over the years, these meters proved inefficient. Not only did the company have to cater for postage costs to send monthly electricity bills to clients, but also clients failed to pay in time leading to many power disconnections.
Kenya Power, therefore, introduced the prepaid power meters, where customers are required to purchase electricity tokens in the form of power units beforehand.
These meters are more efficient compared to their traditional predecessors. The customer UI screen allows users to type in the token code they receive after.
As such, it allows you to monitor and manage your electricity usage, which you could also do using the Kenya Power Telegram Bot.
When your tokens fall below the 20 kWh mark, the meter will alert you through its built-in alarm-like sound. Since this alert system is continuous, the sound could become annoying very fast.
How to silence the token meter beeping sound
Here is how to silence the beeping sound based on the model of your token meter:
Hexing
Hexing meter model seems to be most common in many households.
To stop the beeping sound on this meter you need to press 812, then hash (#), or press 812 then “Enter”.
Nirav
If your meter has the name “Nirav Star Instrument” printed on it, just press 1037 then hit “Enter” button 3 times.
Conlog Intech
In one long press on the hash (#) button will stop the sound on a Conlog meter that keeps beeping when you have few units.
Actaris
To stop this sound as you plan to buy additional tokens, long-press the “Enter” button.
For one reason or another, a method may not work for your meter model. Try out the steps specified for the other models. These steps will be updated regularly to include new meter models or tricks.
Inhemeter
Press 016 then hit ‘Enter” button
